Hello, My husband is having surgery in a couple of months at Rush University Medical Center and I am going to have a lot of free time, I'm wondering what the area around the medical center is like, is there any shopping, what are some dining options? I will have a but would prefer not to drive, but I love to walk as long as it is safe (can you tell I'm not from the city) and I could attempt to use the bus system if you can promise me I won't get lost:-)Any information you can provide would really be appreciated! If you do drive to Rush, you may purchase pre-paid parking stickers at the front desk, which are a big savings over the usual daily rate. If you will be there late in the evening, plan on taking a cab or driving, especially since you are from out of town.

Does anyone know odds for a waitlisted interview for Rush. But check out this PA forum for Rush and you can look at past cycles & the current cycle. The transitchicago site can tell you exactly which buses will work for you as well. You will be several blocks away, as Dave indicated, from the LIttle Italy neighborhood on Taylor Street. It will be a cold, but doable, walk in winter, which is when it sounds like you will be there. There is a cafe in the lobby open 24 hours, it's run not by Rush but by a restaurant group, I just can't remember which one right now.Bring your walking shoes, Rush is a very large and confusing complex. Unfortunately I spent too much time there last winter with a family member. You are in the Medical District, which is near Little Italy, UIC campus, the near West Side,.
'Near West Side' is probably the best description. There is a Marriott hotel very close to Rush, if you need ideas on where to stay.Depending on where you stay, and what hours you need to be at the hospital, you may want to drive. Don't try to drive during rush hours, however. For shopping, etc., you should take the Blue Line into downtown (4-5 quick stops, 10-15 minutes). Edited: 5:06 pm, September 23, 2011.
